Low Carb Chocolate Mousse

That’s right, chocolate mousse was my first love. My first low carb dessert love that is!

I’ve always had a big sweet tooth growing up. When I first started shifting to a low carb lifestyle, I couldn’t last a week without getting a sweet treat (while staying Keto, of course)! Back then, all I used was heavy cream and unsweetened cocoa. But now I know better!

This version is much tastier! This recipe has a few more ingredients than my original, all while staying keto-friendly and tasting x2 better.

I am sure you will enjoy this low carb chocolate mousse as much as we do!

Naturally Sweetened

I love this low carb chocolate mousse not only because it’s rich and creamy, but also because it’s naturally sweetened without any harmful chemicals.

Choosing to follow a low carb diet has made me more aware of what I put into my body. Before I would just walk down the baking aisle and pick up a box of instant pudding and whip that up. But, in most of those, there are way too many ingredients that I no longer want to consume, even (or especially) in the “sugar-fee” instant boxes. Those always seem to have the worst and scariest ingredients!

I love knowing what I’m putting into my body now. No more relying on conveniently packaged food products! I will always prefer quality over convenience!

To make this a sugar-free dessert, you’ll need to use a natural sweetener. My favorite granulated sweeteners are Monk fruit (no after taste) or the Stevia packets.

How To Make Low Carb Chocolate Mousse

step by step photos to make low carb chocolate mousse

This can be quite the complicated one.

You see, what we are doing here is adding all the ingredients together into one large bowl. Find your electric blender, set it to medium speed, and blend until your arms are tired, or for about 3 minutes. You’ll want to blend until your mousse is creamy and stiff peaks are formed. Pretty tough, huh? 😉

Seriously though, I love having a quick and easy recipe on hand when I want something sweet and chocolatey. I should point out that you can sweeten this yummy dessert more or less to suit your taste buds. If you want it more chocolatey, add a little more cocoa. If you want it sweeter, add more sweetener. Easy Peasey!

Low Carb Chocolate Mousse Essential Ingredients

  • Monk Fruit Sweetener – Our favorite keto sweetener.. no aftertaste and taste amazing! Use “BUTTERTOGETHER” for 20% off entire purchase.
  • Organic Stevia Packets – Another great sweetener alternative. These are awesome packets to take on the go.

The Perfect Low Carb Chocolate Treat

I love how creamy this turned out, and it is so filling! Due to the heavy cream being a high-fat dairy, this basically acts as a fat bomb as well.

“Fat Bomb” is a term you may be familiar with if you’re on the ketogenic diet. You can learn more about it here.

To optimize the flavor even more, add some whipped cream on top (I know, I know, whipped cream on your whipped cream – weird) and garnish with some unsweetened cocoa nibs or even some Lilys chocolate chips.

This would also be a great topping on a cake! I’m more of a buttercream girl but my mom loves a good whipped cream icing on a cake, so I may have to make this for her birthday!

We remade the recipe and added them in these super cute mason jars with ChocZero Bark (keto friendly chocolate) on top and it was the best decision ever! Our code “buttertogetherkitchen” gets you 10% off HERE.

OMGoodness, can I add on a star? This looks and sounds so yummy! I am having a hard time believing a rich, creamy, chocolaty dessert has only 1 carb per serving. I’ll eat more than 1 serving but still that is so low even with my diabetes I could have this.

    • Kasey

I know right?! Thanks to the heavy cream used for this. But, oh so delicious.. Love us some guilt free dessert! 🙂

    • Joy Erholtz

  • tina wilkinson

I made this tonight and it was so good! Carbs came out a little higher, maybe cause I used swerve. We will definitely be making this again!

  • Jennie H

I made this in my Bullet blender cup. Stay with it or it WILL turn to chocolate butter! I did thin it out (after it was out of the bullet) with Almond milk. I split the mousse into 2 portions and added the almond milk to each as needed. This became more like a pudding. I put a little sprinkle of unsweetened coconut on top. WOW! So good. I could only eat a little because it is so rich. Going to try to freeze some to see it I can get ice cream like. Maybe spread it on parchment and freeze. To be continued.

  • Elizabeth

FREEZE IT! I did this and it seriously tasted like simple buyers chocolate ice cream that I used to buy before going keto. It’s AMAZING! Thank you!

  • Sarah

Absolutely Fantastic!! This was so easy and it is so good! I can’t believe it’s only 1 carb!! I did however replace the 1 tsp of vanilla with 1 tsp mint extract. Everyone loved it! I think we have a new family favorite! Thank you!

  • Suz

OMG, This is the fastest and best sweet treat I’ve had on keto. Even if I wasn’t doing keto I’d love it. My bf tried it and loved it, but no sharing, lol! I stretch it out to 3-4 servings, it is rich but so satisfying! I freeze 2 and one in the fridge in small containers. Then I get to eat the rest out of the bowl, lol! 🙂

  • Diane

A 5-star dessert for sure! Delicious and so quick and easy. I just made it and it really satisfies the sweet tooth. Because I didn’t have enough cream I had to cut the recipe in half, but it was still very satisfying. I also added about a teaspoon of espresso powder. Will definitely make again…and again…and!

    • Kasey

Woohoo, thank you! So happy you enjoyed it! Simple and quick recipes are the best. 🙂

I made this tonight it was good but I used Splenda and it didn’t taste very sweet..like I wasn’t expecting it to be overly sweet because it is keto friendly of course but I was wondering if anyone could suggest another sugar alternative to make it taste more dessert like? Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed it and was looking something light but crave curbing and this is it just needs to be a little sweeter..any advice is appreciated thanks

    • Kasey

We highly reccomend Lakanto Monkfruit sweetener!

      • Jessica Farrow

Looks delicious! What brand of whipping cream did you use? Mine has 1 carb per Tbsp making the carb count higher than your total. Thanks!

I make this chocolate mousse weekly…. sometimes more! It is the quickest and easiest, most delicious dessert. Thank you!!! I’d give it ten stars if I could.

    • Kasey

Thank you so much! We are glad that you like it so much. It is a favorite here, too!

  • Megan

This sounds absolutely delicious however when I scanned the scan bar on my carton of heavy whipping cream in Carb Manager, it’s states 1 tablespoon is one carb so I’m not exactly sure how one serving is only one carb

    • Kasey

The heavy cream we use has a zero carb count. The brand is Organic Valley.

  • Lisa

I tried making this but it never fluffed up. I tried hand whipping it for 6 minutes. Do I truly need a hand mixer?

    • Kasey

It is much easier with a mixer, but it is able to be done by hand. It will just take longer. Enjoy!

  • Tracey Armentrout

I have made, using SF Jello pudding, using heavy cream and cream cheese. Oh my, so good.

  • Erin Kinnard

Can we substitute almond milk for the heavy cream? Or will it not be the right texture?

  • Sandy

Word of warning – if you beat too long, you will have chocolate BUTTER ! Heavy cream, when churned (beaten) makes butter. I have made this mistake ! Lol

    • Kasey

Thank you for sharing! It does happen 🙂 Luckily it tastes yummy anyways, but we definitely prefer chocolate mousse to chocolate butter!

  • Kim

Delish! I added 1/2 t of instant expresso powder and orange zest! What a decadent dessert. Using my balloon whisk on my mixer it only took 90 seconds! Ha I was watching for the butter!!! ❤️
